Thursday Coaching Tip: How do you give feedback to clients without micromanaging?

Remember - Coaching is never about our opinions or what we think a client should do. Coaching is about helping clients get to their own answers through reflective listening, powerful questions, and direct communication.

When a client asks you, "What do you think?" Turn that question back around and ask them what they think. The client needs to reflect inward and go deeper. We`re so used to the world offering advice and input that we often jump to help, not allowing the client to have a learning moment to work through their issues.

If you do have advice for your client, use The Sandwich Technique.
For example: "I got something for you; would you mind if I shared it?" or "I heard you say X" and make your suggestion." Then, ask if it fits what they need.

By doing this, you`re following the ICF Core competencies and staying out of managing the client.
